The “Notes” entry: The laziest entry of them all

The past week or so has consisted of working on a “special project” and simply enjoying the nice weather by either reading or hitting golf balls (yes, I like golf; get over it).
It’s nice to finally have a “project” off your back. At least for me. Along with the relief that follows hitting a deadline, [...]

The stories behind these pictures and more at Reporter’s Notebook

What have you been missing by not checking out my Tumblr log, Reporter’s Notebook? For one thing, if you were checking that site out, you’d know what these pictures are all about:

What’s Reporter’s Notebook (see the link on the right rail)? Think of it like Twitter with photos and RSS feeds to other sites I [...]

Why so serious, Bronze Fonz?

The Bronze Fonz was unveiled today. I have nothing to add concerning any of the “controversy” and “protests” (and I use the terms loosely) over the statue and whether it’s a good use of public art. Instead, I just want to point out a weird similarity between the Bronze Fonz and actor Conrad Veidt, who [...]

We love it when our friends become successful

One of the best things about blogging is being able to tell other people when your friends do cool stuff. Granted, the only people who read this blog are my friends, but it’s the thought — and the links — that counts.
Two former MKE’ers have expanded their online shadow, and they’re worth checking out:

Training With [...]

CNN’s headlines are almost as funny as The Onion’s

CNN really has to stop pretending to be The Daily Show. Not because as a journalistic institution, it’s above all that. It’s because CNN’s mission involves reporting and dissecting global events, which most of the time requires a reverent tone. The Daily Show, on the other hand, cracks jokes and makes fun of global events, [...]

An outrage of Olympic proportions in China? Sure, if you look past all the human rights abuses

Full disclosure: I’m not a big Olympics fan. I don’t get choked up on the big, juicy chunks of NBC-produced nationalism, nor do I rage over the endless amounts of broadcast time — and bandwidth — devoted to coverage of the Games. I’m rather indifferent to the four-year affair, including the winter version. That’s why [...]

What is journalism to you?

I’ve been meaning to post something about a discussion I came across on the Whitechapel message boards. The topic: How do you define journalism?
If you’re a journalist, these discussion threads are pretty commonplace on industry boards and Web sites, especially now when there’s such flux in the business. However, I found it interesting that this [...]

UPDATE! Montauk Monster disappoints me; ennui sets in

It appears the Montauk Monster really is a piece of retro-fitted viral marketing. You can read about the convoluted tale on Gawker. Granted, the viral marketing explanation is not definitive, but it’s pretty damn close.
Again, hucksterism and crass commercialism has slapped another coat of cynicism paint on me. *Sigh*

Moving on for me and my grandma

I know, I know. I just started a blog, and the first thing I do is move. What little I had posted has moved with me, so don’t worry.
And in my quest to break as many rules as possible when it comes to cultivating an online audience, I haven’t posted in quite a while. But [...]

NY’s creature feature is hope of a strange world

Apparently, some unknown creature has washed up on the shores of New York. The Montauk Monster, as it’s been named, resembles some type of prehistoric anteater, and it looks to be in good condition (except for being dead and all) with very little decomposition.
Speculation has already started that this could be some type of viral [...]
