Sarah Palin’s future plans

Fantasy art model*. It’s no secret her two idols are Frank Frazetta and Fabio. Her dream is for her image to be airbrushed on the side of a Chevy Econoline van.
*This is the same reason why Obama isn’t spending as much time as he should on health care reform.

Is the collapse of newspapers more powerful than a locomotive?

When the two things that have consumed my life for decades — comic books and journalism — I’m legally contracted to remark on it. So if you have issues with this entry, you can blame editorial cartoonist David Horsey for creating the following panel.

This idea — Superman’s alter ego, journalist Clark Kent, dealing with newspaper [...]

Astonishing Tales of Mass Consumption (2.15.09-3.9.09)

Some brief reviews and discussions about a few of the things I was putting in my ear holes, eye holes, nose holes and mouth hole over the weekend past few weeks. And yes, here be SPOILERS, so tread at your own risk.
In This Installment Watchmen, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Frozen River and new albums by Aceyalone [...]

Friday Rant: After ‘Watchmen’ … go out for drinks instead of reading a comic book

Watchmen opens today, marking the zenith — or nadir, depending on your point of view — of comic book culture. As Guttenberg unleashed the Bible to the heathens, Zack Snyder has freed Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel achievement from the medium of dregs and spastics and birthed it into the medium of the [...]

Watchmania is … slowly … destroying … MY MIND!!!

Do you think there’s some guy out there who’s been trying to invent an emoticon that resembles the Comedian’s blood-stained smiley face button? Maybe he tried out i ), and it just didn’t take? Or maybe that guy’s trying to change the meaning of ; ) from “wink” to “Who watches the Watchmen?”
Who do you [...]

The best — and worst — cuts of Watchmen hype

You can’t swing a dead German Shepherd without hitting some type of Watchmen hype. I’m sure marketing like this helps sway people on the fence about seeing the movie, but for the fans already anticipating it, it can really be oversaturation.
So while I’m waiting to see the movie tomorrow night, I’ve put together some of [...]

Friday Rant: Grow up, fanboys! Alan Moore is right

In two weeks, Watchmen premieres in movie theaters across the country. The 1986-87 comic series the movie’s based on is considered a seminal work of superhero fiction by some and the best graphic novel of all time by others. Sales of the collection have been skyrocketing ever since the first trailer appeared before The Dark [...]

Cost-effective Comics Reading (2.11.09 edition)

Because there aren’t enough comic blogs out there right now telling you what’s coming out or reviewing new books, I figured I’d get a piece of that action and do it, too. What makes me so special? You tell me. You’re the one reading my blog.
Actually, I’m going to use this feature to see whether [...]

The Great Scott Pilgrim Travesty of ‘09

As noted last week, I’ve been champing at the bit¹ to get my hands and read Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe, the fifth volume of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s wonderful comic series. Although the book dropped last Wednesday, my local comics shop was shorted its order, which meant I’d need to wait a week to read comics’s [...]

Don’t let me down: Comics I’m buying (2.11.09)

Because there aren’t enough comic blogs out there right now telling you what’s coming out, I’m going to do it, too. What makes me so special? You tell me. You’re the one reading my blog.

Actually, I’m going to use this to see whether or not I’ve wasted money buying a piece of entertainment that didn’t live up to — or exceed — my expectations. By the end of the year, we’ll see how much cash I wasted on comics that let me down.
